"MAN OF MANY COUPS" |
| The greatest act of bravery for a warrior during battle was to touch an enemy with either his bare hand or a coups stick. By doing so he was saying I could have killed you but did not. A coups showed disdain for the enemy as not being worthy of killing. To a warrior, to die in battle was the ultimate honor, so to be merely touched by the enemy in battle was a huge disgrace. Each coups was counted and the warrior wore on his robes the count for all to see, his deeds of bravery. |
